has to be Charlie Hernandez and his wife Rosie. He retired
from pro play at a young age and worked with amateurs starting
at the "Y" in New haven and later AAJA near the Milford fronton.
He was an early game frontcourt man in 70's at Bridgeport. I don't
think he ever sniffed the late games and played against guys like
Egurbi, Ondarres, Bereicua, Lecube and those elite players....maybe
got in as a sub a few times ?, but clearly a very ordinary player.
I know I was too young to drive when Amateur jai alai was at YMCA,
so it must have been somewhere around 1977-8 when I'd have been
like 14-15.
Does anybody know whatever happened to Charlie/Rosie H ? Considering
that he was a pioneer in amateur jai alai in ct, I'd think he
might make an appearance at Matt's. Hernandez is an American,
not like he moved back to Spain.
I assume he is still alive, should be only 60-65 (65 at most)
years old. Maybe AAJA didn't work out to well for him ? I'm pretty
sure he was under 30 when he stopped playing pro.
I have to respect Matt for being a mail carrier (not an easy
job) by day and a playing pro jai alai at night....unreal physical
demands doing both at the same time.
