Carom serves have been allowed at various points I know but then changed back to illegal.
I also wonder why can't a player who is receiving in singles simply stand up near the over serve line to try and snag a possible tough serve? Is that an unwritten rule too? Not that it would be a good idea to do this very often. Forget the running up to try and grab it like Bascaran did back in the 80s at Hartford. That was funny as hell and Buddy put an end to that after a week or two as I remember.
