Manual ticket machines were before my time but I've heard stories where the tellers had a punching device. I have the image in my head that it was a handle on a lever that would move in a circular motion and the teller would push the handle down over the number selected. For a 4-8 quinella the teller would move the handle clockwise to the 4 punch it down and then move the lever to the 8 and then punch it down. If this is what it was like how did the teller know the total for the amount of bets? Did he/she just no how to do the math in their heads really quickly? Did the stamper stamp ink or did it put a hole in the ticket? Was the system automated at all or did the tellers have to pool all their tickets together with each other after the closing bell and add them up to see how much was in the total pool? I've always wondered this.
