Only the most cerebral players would even consider it and they
have. Most players play from the heart, with lots of pride and
natural ability. They would never loose a point on purpose to get
to the double point round because they truly believe they can
beat anyone anytime. Some players play a more cerebral game and
make up for physical deficiencies by out smarting their opponent.
The cerebral players usually come to the conclusion that they
cant beat everyone all the time so they think of ways to improve
their odds of winning the game. The best players have both the
natural physical and cerebral abilities. I cant say that any one
particular player lost the point on purpose to set themselves
up better for double points and talked about but I would bet it
has happened. If winning the game is the objective, then is loosing
a point to put yourself in a better position to win the game strategy
or something else, should it be compared to lock n feed which
is the way a coward/cheater/looser would do it not a winner? As
a bettor or most partners you would never want to know a player
lost the point to get to double points but it is a strategy. I
can tell you I would never loose on purpose it goes against my
competitive spirit but if I thought I was over matched I would
take more chances and try for a perfect shot as soon as I could.
At Hartford toward the end if I was playing with certain early
game backcourters and I was serving to Zulaica and Larrea you can
bet if Jughead was on the wall I would be throwing a carom serve. A
lot of fans would hate it and say things like just play the point
what are you scared. I would laugh and say to myself not scared
just smart. My team might beat that team 1 out of 20. So the only
chance was for me to end the point as soon as I could get my cesta
on the ball and then face Danny and Lasa or Galla and James and
try to do it again, lol.
