I thought about this for a day and I calculate the AVERAGE PAYOUTS using your FIRST EXAMPLE . I took statistics class and that was how we where taught.

IF 3 quinellas pay 1)$20 2)$30 and 3) $50.00 The average payout would be $33.33
doesn't matter the amount of money in the pool or the amount of tickets payed out.

same thing if I would to get 3 paychecks. First paycheck is for $500.00 for the week , the next paycheck is for $700.00 and the final paycheck was for $800.00.

LETS say I work on commission and I made the whole $500.00 in just ONE day and that is the only day I worked that week, I still made $500.00 for the week.

This would average $666.66 a week over the 3 weeks. Even if I worked all 7 days to get the $700.00 (2nd week) or if I worked 4 days to get the $800.00 (3rd week).

to me averages are averages and numbers are numbers.
