As an ex-player my conversations pretty much go like this on this suject:
Them - What brought you to this country? or What did you do in the past?
Me - I used to be a Pro Jai Alai Player?
After that I generally get 3 different reactions. They either
don't know what it is or they think it is amazing. But let's get
back to the topic.
Them - Oh my God that game is so fixed it is unreal. (Now apparently
they have already forgot they talking to a former pro and are
not at all worry about offending me or getting punched on the nose)
Me - What makes you say that? (unless I completely ignore them)
Them - Come on it is the human factor.
And to keep the attention of my readers I will shorten the exchange.
Me - Do you watch football, baseball, basketball etc? Do you bet
on any of these? Do you play golf? Do you bet on any of these?
Do you bet horseracing?
The answer to most or all of these is always YES.
Me - Who play these sports? Who rides the horses? MONKEYS?
Them -
You got it, no answer. Plus I just called them a monkey since
I asked if he/she played golf and the have no way to come back at me.
So now depending on the person, the conversation continues or
I just walk away. Most often I walk away.
