What hasn't been mentioned yet is that a post 8 runout was "just
what the handicapper ordered" back in the days of handicapped
post assignments.
This was a situation designed in jai-alai heaven.
Start with your best serve grabber. Zulaica at Milford, Arregui
at Palm Beach, etc. Give him one of his better partners and post
# 8.
Then put teams with killer stats in the 5-6-7 posts. Stats that
seem irresistable to the crowd. That way you will get a nice price
on the 8.
And don't forget to put the three weakest teams in 1-2-3.
Now, no matter what happens, your 8 will face only one of the
tough teams and ideally beat them off the serve. Then it's just
a matter of plowing thru the weakies and Game Over.
I have won that way a thousand times.
If Arregui drew post 8 for the final game of the Palm Beach weekend
matinee, it was so automatic that the maintenance guy probably
started heading for the main power switch the minute Arregui took
the first point.
Of course, today, with random post assignments, that particular
setup is probably some kind of blue moon frequency. Back then,
it happened all the time.
