Hiya, Chris!
Ok...the tournament you are referring to was the New England Pepsi
Challenge: Milford vs. Newport. Michael and Ibar represented Newport
and Milford players qualified based upon their weekly performances
in the Milford Doubles Championship in Game 14. The first game
was played October 1, 1993 in Newport, where almost 1000 people
attended the performance...many fans hailed from CT. Michael and
Ibar had a stellar performance and crushed Mark and Badiola with
a score of 12-5. I really enjoyed that evening with some of the
CT fans!
The second match was played in Milford on October 8th...another
unbelievable match! Xabat and Azpiri beat Michael and Ibar 12-11...very
close!
Milford players traveled to Newport again on October 15th...another
nail-biter...Michael and Ibar defeated Tevin and Irazabal 12-11.
In case this is getting a bit boring, I'll provide you with a
listing of the other 2 games' players and results from Newport:
October 29th: Michael and Ibar: 12 Urquidi and Acin: 7
November 12th: Michael and Ibar: 9 Jandro and Alfonso: 12 (Note:
this is the only match where Milford players defeated Newport
players in Newport.)
The final game of the tournament was held at Milford Jai Alai
on November 19th. Newport needed to beat Milford with a score
of 12-3 to garner the trophy. The Milford players, Castro and
Badiola, played brilliantly, especially Badiola! When Milford
charged ahead 8-0, Michael had to depart from the cancha with
a wrist injury...Asier was the substitute for FC. To the demise
of the team, Asier took too many wild chances and he dropped the
pelota trying to catch Castro's perfect serves! Newport lost the
game 12-0...it was a fabulous tournament!!
Best Regards,
Tony and the Crew
