One night when I arrived at Tampa Jai-alai, as I walked in
the door and the one minute bell was ringing so I ran over to
the entries board to get a quick bet in. It was the 9th game (singles).
Darrell was in the 1 post so I figured I'd throw a few bucks on
him. I made only one bet, it was an $8 play on the superfecta
1/56/23/2356. It ended up coming in 1-6-3-8. No one hit it straight
so it paid 1-6-3-All $575.00. Since it was two separate bets I
cashed an $1,100 ticket and didn't have to sign for it. At that
time I was going to Jai-alai at least 4 or 5 days a week so I
cashed my ticket, made about $50 worth of advance bets and got
the hell out of there with cash in hand.
Another moment I'll never forget was in Orlando. My dad, a friend,
and I had drove over from Tampa for the matinee. First game we
were there was also a superfecta game. I had probably about $20
in the game and it was getting close to post time. I asked my
friend if he wanted to split a $5 super. He said sure. I don't
remember the numbers we bet but the format of the bet was a 1-2-3-All.
We hit it and were high fiveing each other waiting for the payouts
to appear. My dad was cussing us for not asking him if he wanted
in on the bet. We thought it was the funniest thing in the world
until the payouts came up and it only paid six dollars and some
change because there was no money in the pool. The worst part
is the Tri paid about $950 and I look over at my dad waiving his
winning Tri ticket at me with a big shit-eating grin on his face
and saying, "That's what happens when you try to screw your
daddy"
