You are wrong. Judging by your statement of "pros and ex pros, were just a little 'more' of players then amateurs", you obviously were not around during the strike. While it is true the strike enabled some very good amateurs to become pros it also allowed some amateurs with very little skill and ability to become pros. The players who were not that good lasted a season or two then were not re-signed but still carried the distinction of being an 'ex pro'. I would say prior to 1988 your statement would be true but after 1988 it would be false.
