The ones that pelotadawg and Badiola wore were a piece of molded plastic similar to what a basketball player might wear. Doubt that it affored much protection. Might diffuse the energy to some degree and then cut the hell out of you face. Didn't see much value in them other than incidental contact other than with a pelota.
