Hi Emph,
For your 'Classified Files', I was thinking this morning
that you might be interested in Iriondo II's background:
He is from Mutriku, Gipúzcoa, he was a FC player in the
amateur league in Spain, however, he didn't fare very well as
a FC player, so he switched playing positions. He made his professional
debut in Tijuana, Mexico in 1988. After that stint, he was contracted
in Miami. His older brother, Iriondo I, made his debut in West
Palm Beach in 1987. He played under the name Laga. In 1988, he
played in Newport before the professional players went on strike.
During the strike, he opted to bow out and go back to Spain and
he never returned to the US. Iriondo II, in my humble opinion,
is the weakest BC player in the Summer Tournaments that are taking
place in the Basque Region now. Don't get me wrong, I think that
he tries very hard to play well, but his right-side is not very
strong and his catching ability is weak as compared to other BC
players participating in the Tournaments. One thing I will tell
you about the match-ups for future reference: The best or nearly
the best FC players are usually paired up with a weaker BC player...of
course, Goikoetxea is the best front courter in the world currently
and should not be playing with Irastorza because they would most
likely eat the entire buffet table.
Best Regards,
Tony and the Crew
