Usually if someone tries the outside serve that ends up bouncing over the player's cage...it is in singles. Maybe that is what you saw between Mark and Benny dd. I couldn't tell from your post. But the part about picking the serve in the original question...is specific to doubles only of course. It would be very high risk to try that outside serve in doubles. It is too easy for the receiving frontcourter to slide over and catch it with their right side and then the server is pretty much toast. But....going back to the original post....I say yes....picking the serve is totally fair. It takes skill to do, there is a risk, and if a server is getting picked constantly then they need to work on their serve. That's actually one of the easiest things to do by yourself in jai-alai...practice your serve. The ball comes back to you every time. As opposed to practicing your remate from the 6 line by yourself....and chasing the ball after every throw....
