Re(3): #359 - Can you, literally, 'throw a chula'?

There are a couple of circumstances where players intentionally throw successful chulas. These are mostly in singles. On the reverse, the goal is always to minimize the rebote, so hitting the ball off the back wall as low as possible is ideal. So, there, players are aiming for a chula and sometimes will get it.

The other circumstance is on the right side, again, usually in singles. Most players like to lob a right side over the opponent's head and have it land close to the backwall to chic-chac. A lot of times, I would have opponents do a fall-down rebote from the 14-line and clip it off the side wall to beat me, so I didn't even want to give them a chance. Many times, and other players do this as well, I would throw the right side with power either 3/4 or fully over the top. This gives less reaction time and creates a lot more english on the chic-chac, shortening the length of the rebote opportunity. Ideally, I would be aiming to hit the exact corner of the floor and the back wall so the ball would just roll out. It is a lower percentage chula occurrence, but it does happen. In fact, when I did successfully throw a right-side chula, Benny dubbed it a 'holy roller'.

In doubles, I don't think I ever really aimed for the chula. You want to hit the back wall as low as possible to minimize the rebote, but a chula is an easy catch for the backcourter. So, the perfect deep return (right or left side) to me would be close to the side wall and hitting the back wall about 3'-4' above the ground.

They do happen, but chula is the most over-used term in the sport. It is extremely rare to have the ball actually roll off the back-wall. I probably threw about 8 in 4 yrs. at Ft. Pierce.
