Thanks Tiger for this wonderful site. I visit it almost every day and get a lot of pleasure from it. I do not believe for one minute that Big Bend Jai Alai (BB) will ever reopen with a major emphasis on the sport. If it ever did, which in my opinion is an extreme longshot, it would probably be the watered down version that we see operating at Hamilton. Although people refer to it as "in Quincy," it is actually just south of the Chattahoochee exit and borders the Jackson County line. Gadsden County has a population of around 45,000 and is, aside from the 'old money,' an impoverished area. I moved to Tallahassee from Miami in the mid seventies to attend school and thought that I would watch the sport only when I went back to visit family. I was extremely happy to have attended BB on its opening night. Over the years it became my favorite fronton. I worked in mutuals for 2 seasons while attending school (hey what better reason could one have for their spouse in order to go to the fronton five or six times a week?) and got to know many of the people from the area. Initally, and for close to a decade, BB had a good following. On weekends handles were over $100k. I truly hope that it reopens some day but if it could not make it the 90's, I do not see it being successful now, especially with this economy. I stop by the BB 'ruins' at least once a year and each visit finds it in worse shape that the prior visit. A number of years ago I wrote an essay about BB for another site. If I can ever find it I would like to repost it here. Thanks again Tiger.
