Hitting the overhead screen usually makes the ball drop straight down and would make it unfair to the opponent, part of jai-alai is to have control of where you are throwing it, the overhead screen is part of the reason players don't launch home runs all the time, however I have always thought that the players cage sticking out was an odd obstruction and maybe the ball should still be in play if it nicks it coming off the back wall.
