A long, long, time ago when I first became a Jai-Alai fan in Miami,
I was positive that numbers went on cold and hot streaks and there
was money to be made by tracking them closely. Alas, I found the
pelota, just as the roulette wheel (if balanced), the craps table
and many other gambling games, has no memory whatsoever. Sure,
there are streaks but predicting when they will start or end is
futile.
HOWEVER, I once had a conversation with Ramon Elordi (Churruca)
at Newport. The 6-4 perfecta had been on fire the first month
of the season. There was no combination even close to it. Ramon
pointed to the 6-4 in the program and said something like "too
many, I fix this." For the next few weeks, he put the best
players in 5, 7 and 8 and the 6-4 took a holiday.
The Spectacular Seven System of Scoring favors certain combinations
more than others, but it's still the players who make the numbers
come in. If you took some guys off the street and put them in
post 2 and 5 all night, I guarantee you would be chasing that
2-5 quiniella for an eternity.
Now if the 2-5 is written on the pelota, that's entirely another
story....
