I once heard that one reason most frontons stopped 9-point singles was the fact that it would be "easier" for players to collaborate a fix on the superfecta. The idea being that only 3 players would need to get together and agree to lose intentionally then box the other 5 for the superfecta. Maybe there was a case where this was suspected....or just the public perception that this could happen. Though the reality now is the pools aren't big enough to make this worthwhile.
