The assumption re uneven competition in early games needs to be
re-examined. That is because if someone is too good for the early
games, he eventually gets promoted.
But one-of-kind guys like Goiko and Storza, who outshine the rest,
cannot possibly get promoted. This creates an ongoing talent imbalance
in the late games.
Also, you can get guys in the lates who are not really good enough,
but are there because of no other good alternative. Not to mention
subs.
Finally, the "dynamic range" of the star players could
actually be greater than that of the typical early gamers. So
if it's one of those days when they are in the zone, they are
a lot more lethal (runout capable) than the corresponding hot
early games guy.
Fur(ther) example: Any fronton employing Bolivar in his prime
probably had more late game runouts.
