good question Tiger! i found that when i am at the fronton, i will try to see who is warming up with a new basket or new shoes. then during the practice throws, i will notice if the player is confident in the feel of his equiptment and such. i look for a player that will throw a ball "wide" with the right side or "low" or "high" with the left side to determine if the player is with a new basket.
i have found that a player will use a new basket with a team member that he " is uncomfortable with" or is anticipating missing the board with.
i generally dont bet on guys with wild practice throws since i feel that they are either looking for a way out of a game or if the game in question is not on the up & up.
i also would look for players wives, girlfriends, "acquaintences", in the crowds and betting lines and see if a reaction from a certain way a player practices before a game will determine if the post will "hit the board" or not.
anyways,,,its alll apples and oranges now since the late 80's, thats my humble opinion, and i am sticking to it!
