Yes and no, Carlo.
There's technically no difference in payoffs with a 50-cent bet,
at least as far as the pari-mutuel pool calculations are concerned.
However, the smaller bet does enable/encourage 'spreading it around'
But, don't try to tell me it decreases all payoffs. If
more money is bet on 'longer' combos, then less will be bet on
more 'likely' combos, thereby increasing their payoffs.
The net result of mini-bets is as follows:
Long combos, already unplayable due to the tiny pools, become
even less so because they might be covered by a 'spreader' bettor.
Many mid-probability combos are unplayable, too, due to pool
size, and those on the cusp are probably negatively impacted
due to 'spreading'
High-probability combos, e.g., 1-4-2, 2-4-1 should pay somewhat
more since less is bet on them due to 'spreading'
I've yet to run a formal analysis, but I believe there are
fewer bettable combinations when the 50-cent bet is in place.
More of an edge to the good handicapper, however, but his net
return may be lower than otherwise.
