The language in their contract only provided for base pay, period.
We were able to negotiate much more than that and longer than
the end of the season. Believe me, it cost her.
And by no means do I condone what Diane did. We spent a lot of
time at the state house trying to persuade legislators not to
let it happen. We were making stride. The day before the budget
vote she sent a letter to legislators offering the state an extra
1% of her share of the slots in exchange for getting rid of live
Jai Alai. That did us in. The night I witnessed that vote was
one of the worst days of my life. So please don't think I condone
what she did.
